ABSTRACT

The subtle forms of the vital energies, physically manifested in the two sexes (male and female), have been discussed in great detail in the ancient Indian spiritual literature under the names Pran and Rayi, Agni and Soma, Swaha and Swadha. Material manifestation of life by the union of the physical forms of these complementary energies is a very small though well known illustration of the magnificent powers of their subtle counterparts. The wise, sane and self-controlled commingling of these subtle energies is instinct with sublime creativity, enthusiasm, exaltation and joy and leads to a state of unalloyed happiness. Its fundamental role in the origin, expansion and movement of life in matter should be studied deeply to find out definite ways of saving men and women from suffering the deadly effects of uncontrolled indulgence in carnal desires, eroticism and related practices and at the same time enabling them to make creative use of their individual as well as ‘coupled’ bio-energies for soul upliftment along with multifaceted growth of human society as a whole.

CHAPTER 1

SOME SPIRITUAL ASPECTS OF SEX

Man’s quest for the origin of the universe and emergence of life has been at the root of scientific investigations of all ages. Modern Science has taken significant strides in its research from atom to levels of subatomic and smaller particles and it now hypothesizes that the universe has been created by sparks of cosmic energy. The Spiritual Science begins its search from still subtler forms of eternal energy and considers the existence of affirms that the universe has originated from the coupling of Prakrati (the omnipresent cosmic energy) and Purus (the ultimate form of Spirit). These vital powers are also described in the ancient Indian scriptures as Rayi and Pran, Sakti and Siva or Soma and Agni. Their complementary roles can easily be discerned in their physical manifestations as positive and negative electrical charges whose combination gives rise to the flow of electrical current.

The holy Upnishads describe that the eternally perpetual cycle of combination and separation of Prakrati and Purus results in the creation of Para (Physical energy) and Apara (Consciousness manifested in thoughts and sentiments) forms of the Universe; the spontaneity and periodicity of the natural movements (e.g. the oscillations of electrons in their orbits or the planetary motions) existing in the physical world are physical manifestations of this process. The subtle existence of the conscious power of Pran in the vital energy of a male and its complementary form in that of a female is the root cause of the creation of life by a suitable combination of the two sexes.

The Omniscient, Omnipresent and Almighty power, which transcends the division of Soul Reality as spirit and matter, manifests itself in three basic forms (Trimurti): Brahma, Visnu and Siva – the Creator, the Preserver and the Destroyer. The Pran aspects of these powers are called by above names and their corresponding Prakrati aspects are known respectively as Savitri, Laksmi and Kali. These forms are described in the Puranas as respective male gods and their female consorts (goddesses) to emphasize the importance of the inherent complementary roles of the two sexes existing in different forms of life.

The subtle vibrations created by the cycle of collision, combination and separation of the opposite forces of Purus and. Prakrati manifest themselves in every movement of the Nature. The constant pumping of the heart along with rhythmic respiration and corresponding compression and expansion of veins, arteries and muscles in a living body; the occurrences of high and low tides in the oceans; motions of planets etc. are a few gross examples of the limitless manifestations of these perpetual vibrations.

1.1 Role of Sex in Human Society

Man and woman coming together as lifemates form a family and contribute to the growth of human species. The union of man and woman as husband and wife is essential in forming a healthy, happy and harmonious society and for perpetuation of the race (leaving aside the rare exceptions who would not do so owing to some compulsions or with determined efforts of self-restrain to fulfil some extraordinary purposes).

Apart from the obvious effects of the physical contact based combination, the complementarity of the Purus and prakrti existing in the opposite sexes contribute at psychological and social levels for the healthy growth and multifaceted development of society. The psychological interdependence of the husband and wife or the sacred affection between brother and sister, father and daughter, mother and son etc. are obvious examples of various relationships between the two sexes.

The psychological principles propounded by Dr. Freud consider the mutual linkage (Kama) between the two sexes as essential for the natural development of the human life. His theories have a grain of truth if analysed scientifically at the level of vital energies of Purus and Prakrati. However, a narrow interpretation of Freud’s words in terms of carnal desire would either lead to sexual anarchy or to an outright falsity of his theory.

The necessity of enlightened discipline and control in human life should be obvious to any balanced and thoughtful mind. Ironically, a large number of people today are indulging in unbridled sensual pleasures. The laws of Nature demand that for a normal and healthy functioning, every organ of the body should be used with care and within limits; the genitals are no exception. Sensual pleasure would be useful for a couple only if practiced in a controlled manner. It should be noted that such a control can not be achieved by a forced physical separation or equivalent compulsions without an appropriate training of the mind, because mental erotic anarchy is worse than the physical one.

Even at present, there exist some tribal areas where ‘topless’ women can be seen working with their male counterparts without inducing any erotic desire .The sanctity of a mother’s breast has always been respected in all parts of the world. These examples indicate that the enlightened conditioning of thoughts and the sentiments play a major role in controlling the sensual feelings.

Erotic literature and other media to arouse eroticism degrade human beings to the level even lower than the animals, who, despite their ‘nudity’ do not indulge in sexual intercourse without the demand and inspiration of nature.

When a man and a woman can maintain sexfree, pure and sacred relationships of father and daughter, son and mother and brother and sister with natural dignity, there is no reason why they can’t do so while living in the same social and biological system under other family relations or as friends or merely as any two members of the human society. The lesson behind the Ras Leela of Lord Krishna was to emphasize this fact that all men and women should live in a healthy atmosphere of friendship, mutual respect and faith and collaborate towards the making of a happy society. Deliberate misinterpretation of this concept of Ras Leela has led to virtual separation of the two equal components of the social system by identifying one as a weaker sex and oppressing it under the ignominious traditions of Ghunghat and Parda enforced in the dark medieval ages.

Modern era of scientific enlightenment should envisage the need of moral upliftment in the social, mental and sentimental value-system of all human beings so that the equality of mutual trust between the two sexes could be made a reality. A scientific analysis of the spiritual aspects of sex would be relevant in this regard,

1.2 Spirituality and Sex

True spirituality stresses the coexistence, co-operation and friendship between the two sexes. Though the sensual pleasure of copulation between the husband and wife is considered a natural part of a happy married life, its occurrence within healthy limits is always emphasized in the spiritual literature.

The uncontrolled and insane sexual indulgence has led to a large number of physical and behavioural problems in modern era. It is a pity that proper education of sex has not found its due place in society even today. The spiritual science of sex should be understood in depth before it can be effectively communicated to the society at large.

The social and political degeneration of medieval era had led to the distortion of the spiritual insights and truths. The sensitive issue of sex suffered the most as a consequence. The obscurant superstitions in the name of religion and suppressions in the name of law prevalent in this era caused maximum damage to the concept of social equality of men and women. The "customary" oppression of women under Ghunghat or Parda (covered head and face) still survives in many parts of India. Women (especially the daughters- in-law) are restrained from talking to any male members (other than their husbands) of their own family. Even with husbands they often have a mere mechanical physical relationship of sex. These soul-stifling customs deprive the women folk of their freedom of exchange of thoughts and generally result in psychosomatic diseases of isolation such as hysteria, inferiority complex and degeneration of mental faculties.

The disgraceful customs of child-marriages and dowry are also examples of the self-inflicted curses of our society. The dignity of the human society is being lowered with mad abandon in the modern times of social awareness through the disgusting (mis)use of talents in the creation of erotic literature and art.

Elimination of this intellectual corruption is a must for the removal of social evils and for a graceful and dignified survival of the human race. Sane and scientific interpretation of the subtle powers of sex would be useful in this context.

The subtle forms of the vital energies, physically manifested in the two sexes (male and female) have been discussed in great detail in the ancient Indian spiritual literature under the names Pran and Rayi, Agni and Soma, Svaha and Swadha. Material manifestation of life by the union of the physical forms of these complimentary energies is a very small though well known illustration of the magnificent powers of their subtle counterparts. The wise sane and self-controlled commingling of these subtle energies is instinct with sublime and creativity, enthusiasm, exaltation, joy and leads to a state of unalloyed happiness.

The fundamental role of the subtle power of sex in the origin, expansion and movement of organic/physical life should be studied deeply to find out definite ways of saving men and women from suffering the deadly effects of uncontrolled indulgence in carnal desires, eroticism and related practices and at the same time enabling them to make creative use of their individual as well as ‘coupled’ bio-energies for soul upliftment along with multifaceted growth of human society as a whole.

CHAPTER 2.

ETERNAL IMPULSE OF BLISS AND MUTUAL COMMINGLING IN THE COSMOS

It is mentioned in the Puranas that Lord Brahma (the original creative aspect of Spirit) created the universe with the help of his two wives (complementary powers) Savitri and Gayatri. These Goddesses are defined respectively as the source of the Para and Apara Prakrati. The Para Prakrati or the Jada Sakti or Savitri is the eternal cause of the existence of energy and matter in the universe. All kinds of planetary, macromolecular, atomic or subatomic movements and subtle particles, vibrations, the cosmic radiations of energy etc. are manifestations of this power. The subtle power of Gayatri, Apara Prakrati is the origin of the omnipresent consciousness. It is manifested as thoughts, feelings and spiritual faculties.

A human being is a living example of the combination of the powers of Para (in physical body) and Apara (in the mind and soul) Prakrati in the ‘visible’ world. Significantly lower levels of these powers exist in the animals and microorganisms.

The highest and the lowest Chakras (latent centers of energy), called Sahastrar (subtly existing in the innermost central part of the forehead) and Muladhar (subtly residing in the deep central part of the genital organ) are said to contain respectively the latent spiritual powers of Gayatri and Savitri existing in a human being. The immense potential of Savitri situated at the Muladhar is described in the spiritual scripts as the Kundalini MahaSakti. The (bio)electrical impulse experienced in the ‘physical’ energy of sex is only a negligible manifestation of this great power.

The latent energy of sex is in fact a great reservoir of vital and supernatural powers. The spiritual science of sex deals with the study of the positive effects of the proper use of this energy for the overall physical, mental and spiritual upliftment of a person and check the immense harms that flow from its wastage or misuse.

How sacred and important was the knowledge of Kundalini for the ancient spiritual education, becomes clear from the fact that even the holy idols of Lords Siva and Sakti have been given a form combining the physical shapes of the male and female genital organs of the human body. Every scientifically trained mind would accept that there is no place for vulgarity or perversion in this representation of the supreme powers of Pran and Rayi (or Agni and Soma) whose combination is the eternal cause of the flow of cosmic energy and the physical manifestation of life.

There is also a story in the Puranas where Lord Siva is said to have burnt Kamadev (the god of amour) into ashes because of the undisciplined attempt of the latter in awakening excessive desire of sex in people against the laws of nature; here, the act of ‘burning’ indicates a purification of the power of Kamadev and not its complete destruction. Many other descriptions can be found in the ancient scriptures, which are focused at the importance of the disciplined use of Kama (the basic though subtle element of sex) in generating happiness and enthusiasm.

The Gayatri part of the Prakrati of Lord Brahma is the eternal source of the consciousness existing in the faculties of thoughts, feelings, sentiments, beliefs, faith and intuition which are inherent in a human being. Purification and upliftment of these faculties can lead to the awakening of the divine energy of Gayatri existing in the soul. The whole philosophy and science of the spiritual practices (of Yoga, Tantra and Mantra) is aimed at the attainment of this ultimate awakened state.

The spiritual practices of awakening the Kundalini deal with above aspects of the conscious power of Kama. The detailed and in-depth knowledge of this Sadhana (spiritual practice) has largely remained secret; the description of its mechanical forms and powers available in the Das Vidya chapter of Tantra Vigyan is also beyond the reach (in terms of proper understanding) of the masses. The difficulties associated with the long-term dedicated disciplines, the danger of negative effects in the absence of proper guidance (by the Guru – the noble spiritual master) and the possibility of vulgar interpretations, misleading physical practices (especially due to the mental degradation in the medieval and post-medieval eras) for exploitation of innocent people appear to be the logical causes for this secrecy.

A thorough review and meaningful analysis of this branch of spiritual knowledge has, however, become necessary in modern era of scientific quest. Curiosity and desire (only at physical level, though) about sex is a natural phenomenon in normal human beings. Scientific interpretation of the spiritual aspects of this power would therefore have an obvious psychological and social impact on human life. It is this positive effect which has motivated the discussions in this volume.

The first lesson one should learn from the spiritual science of sex is that – man and woman are exactly alike spiritually. The two sexes are part of the same source of life; the subtle forms of both exist in every human being as the Pran (or Purus or Agni) in the Sahastrar and Rayi (or Prakrti or Soma) in the Muladhar. Their physical and psychological manifestations are different according to the corresponding natural laws of complementarity. This fact should be understood by everyone and every kind of discrimination between men and women should be entirely eliminated.

2.1 Present Scenario

It is ironical to note that the observance of illogical unscientific beliefs and practices of disrespect towards women is at its peak today in a country like India which was the originator of the spiritual enlightenment of humankind.

The vicious cycle of the degradation of the institution of marriage through evil customs of dowry and ghunghat and discrimination between the male and female children by the parents results in the underdevelopment of the girl child. Sentimental exploitation of motherhood and sexual exploitation (even in the name of religion) of woman’s physical frailty and many similar inhuman acts have got their roots in the psychological, religious, social and political exploitation of the blind faith of the masses by some selfish people in the medieval era of superstitions and ignorance.

The blind race for material success with egotist self- centered mentality in the modern era has triggered the talents towards creating erotic literature and art and sexual exploitation of woman’s beauty. This has worsened the situation to the extent of possible extinction of humanity. It is high time that the spiritual, religious and scientific leaders come forward to eliminate the repugnant ‘theories’, evil traditions and misguided modernity by projecting in true light, the mutual dependence of the two sexes.

Writers, poets, artists, publishers, actors, film-makers and all others who shape and influence public attitudes and tastes are also requested to respect the spiritual sanctity of human body and keep themselves away from eroticism and vulgarity of any kind. Without their co-operation and sincere efforts, future of the human society looks bleak indeed.

2.2 Interpretations of Some Spiritual Texts

According to the spiritual literature, the vigour of Agni (manifested in the energy of fire) and the affability of Soma (as Nectar) both are essential for vitality. The two sexes are existing in nature to complement each other’s survival; enjoy mutual dependence and sharing in all aspects of life. Then why should one sex behave as a master and the other (the so-called weaker sex) remain subjugated and unaware of its own potential?

Men and women are born to give unlimited support, peace and happiness to each other. Some guiding principles (Achar Sanhita) drawn from the spiritual excerpts especially suitable for the Indian society today are worth mentioning here.

Every man should be grateful to the immense contributions of woman as mother, sister, friend or other relative(s) in his life and should realize that the company of a woman in the role of his wife is most important towards the fulfillment of refined desires of love and peace and to live a purposeful life as responsible members of society.

Every woman should also be aware of her creative roles as mother, sister, friend etc. in her complementary relationships with man. She should be most effective as a wife and realize that a wife is neither an object of lustful indulgence nor a bonded labour. Her aspirations should be far above the silly craze for ornaments and clothes or receiving an admiration from her husband for her (physical) beauty. She should develop the confidence and courage to live with dignity of a creative human being and enjoy her role as the co-creator of a progressive family and happy society.

In view of the importance given to the marriage institution in the ancient Indian scriptures, marriage implies a spiritual union and should never be mistaken as a license for uncontrolled carnal sexual indulgence; husband and wife should multiply each other’s qualities and potentials as ‘1+1 = 11 ‘ by mutual respect and support.

2.3 Modern Scientific Aspects

In physical terms, sexual intercourse involves specific bio-electrical energy based interactions. Both the partners lose good amount of their vital energy in each round of this process. Even a thought associated with this process induces stimulating sensation in the related parts (especially the genital organ) of the body. This obvious fact itself should be sufficient to see the role of neural excitation in this process where the reaction seems to be localized at the genital organs alone.

The mutual contact and friction of the male and female genital organs results in loss of thermal and electrical energies from their surface-tissues. The Kirliyan photographic recordings of the energy fields around various parts of the body have shown relatively high density auras around the head, fingertips and the genitals.

During intercourse, the sperm (which itself is a dipole) and the ovum in ‘activated state’ create the necessary electrical potential in the surrounding body fluids for mutual attraction and binding of the involved molecules. Experiments on such electrical fields and their associated vital energy levels have also indicated (cf ‘The Field of Life’ by Dr. Sexten Berr, John Wiley, 1972, and ‘Kaya Urja Aur Usaki Camatkari Samarthya by Pt. Shriram Sharma Acharya, Yug Nirman Yojana, 1979) that sexual excitation and copulation involves extraordinary consumption of the bio(electrical) energy.

Each cell in a human body contains 23 pairs of chromosomes; each pair has one chromosome contributed by the mother and the other by the father. Out of the 23 pairs, there is only one pair which determines the sex of the offspring. Genetical research carried out at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, Maryland (USA) about two decades ago, has shown some interesting observations. In the experimental subjects with abnormal sexual qualities, the chromosomal copy of either of the parents was found to be missing in the sex-determining pair. Such subjects showed almost indifferent attitude towards erotic topics. They, however, possessed some extraordinary talents in different fields. Some subjects with only 21 (instead of 22) pairs of autospal chromosomes and one extra pair or at least a single extra chromosome related to the sexual functions were also studied. These people were generally found to be erotic, lusty, short-tempered, wrathful and violent in nature. This indicated some common negative effects of extra sexuality.

A misinterpretation of Freud’s theory has led many persons (including intellectuals and other talents) of the modern era to propagate ‘sexual satisfaction’ as a key factor for ‘mental health’. This in turn has nurtured eroticism in artistic, literary and other cultural fields.

Advancement of in-depth research in multifaceted and extraordinary abilities of human mind should re-orient the thinking of the above kind of ‘civilized brains’. Some of the significant findings of recent psychological research are presented below as relevant references.

Prof. David Wright of Psychology department of the University of Leicester (London) had carried out detailed studies of the behavioural patterns of a large number of adult participants in various situations: prisoners of war camps, defence institutions, mountaineering and sports. He had found that being occupied in collective, friendly and (re)creative activities, hardly any subject had any sexual desire during the camp(s) although they all were of normal physique and psyche and most of the subjects had experienced the sensual pleasure earlier during their routine married life back-home. Dr. David’s conclusion was that "mental pre-occupation with other (re)creative and/or joyful activities dominates over the sensual desires."

Dr. David Wright had conducted similar psychological experiments on a large number of soldiers of the World War II who were held in various Japanese and Siberian Camps. He had also studied the psychology of several patients who were suffering from various diseases and had been in the hospitals since long. He found that although the above two categories of subjects did not have any sexual intercourse since a very long time, this did not trigger any anguish, lust or abnormality in their behaviour. The desire and hope of again being free, healthy and happy was prominent in the minds and hearts of the majority of them and they used to pray for a peaceful future.

2.4 Spiritual Disciplines and Sex:

The unfortunate period of ignorance in the history of human civilization witnessed the rise of two entirely opposite but equally misleading schools of thoughts; one school implicitly spread eroticism in the name of ‘natural psychology’ and the other gave rise to the obnoxious ‘untouchable’ status to women in the name of spiritual discipline. The so called spiritual masters and ‘learned’ Brahmins of the medieval era in the Indian society considered married life or any kind of relations with women as serious obstruction in spiritual pursuits. This, on the one hand, encouraged escapism from social (familial) responsibilities by the so-called ‘sages’ and ‘devotees’ and on the other, led to an abnormal lusty attitude of the ‘forced bachelors’ (Brahmchari) towards the opposite sex.

Such sham spirituality should be rooted out of the minds of our people. It is the responsibility of every truly learned/ educated person to understand that – spirituality is a science of knowing the "Self" and realizing its dignity in all walks of life.

Even a bird’s eye view of the ancient religious scriptures would show most of the gods and goddesses (for example, Siva - Parvati, Visnu - Laksmi, Ram - Sita etc.) are depicted as married couples. By what logic then their ‘worshippers’ should have decried the marriage institution ? All the Saptarsis (the seven great sages of ancient India) were married and used to perform all their spiritual practices of Sadhana and Anusthan along with their wives. All the Asramas (the education centers or the Gurukuls) of many other Risis (sages) too were run with the help of the active co-operation and help of their wives and children.

Some other equally sacred and glorious examples of mutual respect and dedicated co-operation between man and woman are set by some great spiritual saints of the modern era: Swami Ramakrishna Paramahans and Ma Sharda set a unique example of non-sexual but completely satisfied, creative and divine relationship between husband and wife; Maharshi Aurobindo’s spiritual power and the Holy Mother’s devotion to his inspirations together led to the unmatched success of the Pondichery-Ashram, which is a source of light for many seekers of truth through out the world.

Happy married life in an atmosphere of trust, co-operation and enjoyment could be and should be a normal part of life of most of the common people at an appropriately mature state of mind and body. Except for those gifted with strong willpower and determined dedication and ability towards higher objectives in life, most men and women need faithful life partners.

Spiritual literature describes marriage institution as the best way towards achieving the goals of life; where the two life partners, because of the complementarity of the two sexes, not only help in sharing and shaping each other’s life but also fulfil the social responsibilities by their joint efforts. More than the physical fitness, it is the psychological complementarity of the two sexes which gives enjoyment during sexual intercourse. It should be noted that the sensual pleasure or the physical contact between the two bodies gives only a momentary satisfaction and consumes a lot of vital energy of both the partners. Such practices should be kept to the minimum and a couple should consciously exercise self-restraint.

It is a well-known fact the uncontrolled cravings lie at the root of sensual desires. For example, even in the absence of a man’s/ woman’s body, his/her photographs in vulgar poses or a mere description of the body in an erotic manner is capable of creating such a stimulation... When a social preconditioning and inherent discipline of mind in other kinds of relations between the two sexes (e.g. the relations of doctor and patient, teacher and student or brother and sister etc.) can so naturally and effectively prevent such stimulation then why it should not be feasible for husband and wife to control these stimuli by matured thinking and proper training of mind ? It is only the psychological (e.g. the mutual sentimental support) component which needs to be strengthened in this regard. Because, it is the latter which indeed has a long lasting effect in providing a healthy and strong basis for a happy married life.

The spiritual aspect of sex (Adhyatmik Kam) is much subtler than the psychological one. It manifests itself in the sacred feelings of love, goodwill, enthusiasm, optimism, joy, humour, laughter, confidence, righteousness and inner-peace etc. These inner gifts can be shared between any two persons irrespective of the age group, gender, caste, creed, race, religion, region, mental or social status or value-system. In fact, this is the eternal core of life itself.

The spiritual aspect of sex needs to be given due recognition and its importance needs to be appreciated by the elite of society. May the Omnipresent Spirit enlighten the vanguard of humanity to appreciate and understand the importance of the association of the complementary vital energies of Agni and Soma, Pran and Rayi which alone can generate a harmonious and peaceful atmosphere of mutual respect and co-operation between the two sexes.

CHAPTER 3.

COOPERATIVE INTERACTIONS BETWEEN

THE TWO SEXES

In the sacred performance of Yagna the powers of Agni (fire in the Havan Kunda) and Soma (water-line around the Havan Kunda) both are considered essential. The high thermal energy of fire needs to be controlled by the coolness of water; this is what is indicated by keeping the fire within the limits of a water-line during the performance of a Yagna. The taking out of Kalash Yatra before performing a large-scale Yagna shows that Soma has precedence over Agni.

Apart from the scientific importance of Yagna, the above mentioned matching of Soma and Agni also has significant socio-psychological implications in human life. This teaches that the masculine vigour, physical strength and ego always need to be controlled by the soothing effects of feminine affection and compassion. Motherhood is the greatest gift of God endowed upon nature and the human society. Realizing this, the pre-eminent role of women in society should have been regarded as the law of nature in all spheres of life. Although the ancient society followed this law in action, it is unfortunate that the modern era presents an entirely different scenario.

A major cause of the all pervading inharmony, insecurity, selfishness, cruelty, violence and immorality in the modern world is the disrespect to womanhood. The so-called religious fundamentalists, the powerful emperors, ‘talented’ artists and ‘learned’ writers and poets of the medieval and modern times are to be blamed largely for exploiting the feminine modesty, sentiments and tolerance on the one hand and stimulating the sensual desires of the masses beyond the natural limits on the other.

Had women — the essential half of the human society — been given their due place in the political, social, economical and other important spheres, the world would have been shaped by now in an ideal form, appropriate to the dignity of humanity. If women, with the help of their inherent qualities of motherly kindness and love, modesty and sincerity and abilities of efficient management of resources, had led the political, social, educational, economical and related activities during the modern era then this world would certainly have been saved from the dangers of nuclear and star wars, civil wars and terrorism, population- explosion, environmental pollution, killer diseases like AIDS and the disastrous drug addictions etc.

Although the status of women has been uplifted in the recent past, with the advent of educational and scientific developments in several parts of the world, much still remains to be done in this direction. Latent propagation of eroticism in the name of modernity, art, entertainment and humour continues to degrade feminity in general; suppression of women by their own relatives in the name of religious or social discipline still shows its presence in many parts of the society; the economical, social and political disparities between the two sexes still persists.

It is high time that the worshippers of the divine mother Saraswati (— the eternal source of mental talents and artistic faculties) realize her subtle presence in all women and reorient their attitudes accordingly.

Justice, tenable and reason demand that a wife should neither be considered as a bondmaid nor a child-producing machine. Considering her as a puppet, showpiece or a commodity for the sensual pleasure of her husband is equally harmful for the physical and mental health of the husband. Further, a rise in the new disease like AIDS should be taken as warning signals of nature that it is time for humanity to stop profligacy, debauchery and illicit sex; otherwise the doom is not far off.

The mutual co-operation between the two sexes should be on the bases of equality and mutual self-respect. Even animals do not disobey the laws of nature then why should such possibilities be always suspected in the company of two human beings (— species endowed with highest possible mental faculties) of opposite genders? Why shouldn’t a friendly and ennobling relationship like that between a brother and a sister exist between men and women in all walks of life? It should be remembered that both the sexes are integral part of the human society so both will have to live with the dignity of a human being. It is indeed the responsibility of all awakened men and women to work towards this end.

3.1 Unrestrained Indulgence: Lessons from Nature

Apart from the obvious evil effects like exponential population growth and health hazards, the most dangerous though latent harm of sexual profligacy and related unrestrained acts for mere sensual pleasure lies in causing mental sickness and severe psychosomatic disabilities resulting from hormonal imbalances.

That unrestrained sexual indulgence is disastrous in all respects is clearly cautioned in the following Sutra: Maranam Bindu Paten Jivan Bindu Dharan. The Nature also reminds us of this warning in the form of many examples in the animal kingdom, some of which are listed below:

Each of the male seals ends its own life struggling with other males of its community for a mere possession of more females to fulfil its lust. Similarly, a male frog- fish in its lusty excitation ‘buries’ its teeth in its female counterpart’s flesh and thereby loses its own ability to eat. This ultimately results in the untimely death of the former.

Elephants live in herds. The head of a herd is the only male member who ‘owns’ the ‘right’ to have sexual intercourse with all the female members of the herd. A sexual desire or related expressions shown by any other male member often leads to his serious fight with the herd-leader. The latter, if defeated, usually becomes mad and dangerous for the life of others. Similar insanity is shown by the sexually excited scorpion couples who dance a lot during this process and the female, in her excitation, often attacks and eats off the male.

Lusty men are no less wilder than these animals. Do they deserve to be a part of a civilized human society?

The natural season for copulation in the deers is full of ferverous fights amongst the males as they have to have a head-on collision with their competitors while selecting a female match. The male eagles also have to undergo a peculiar fight with the females who have given mating ‘invitation’ to them; this drains off most of their strength even if they are able to survive the ‘pleasure’ of mating later. Similar is the case with many other animals and birds whose mutual fights in the excitation towards ‘gaining’ the sexual company of the counterpart often turns out to be fatal. Marine zoological research in the 1950s had revealed some significant facts about the angler fish. The male members with a rare survival-rate as compared to that of the females are just one- tenth of the average size, a mere 4 inches as compared to the 40 inches size of the latter. This lustful creature literally survives on the blood of its female host and is therefore, according to the laws of nature, bound to live an underdeveloped life of a parasite.

Don’t the profligate persons also invite similar fate by their licentious sex indulgence?

Spiritual literature describes the attachment to the pleasures of the five sense- organs as a major obstacle in the freedom of the soul. The control of tongue and the sensual pleasure of the sex- organs are considered to be of the utmost importance because these senses are considered to be the most sensitive and strong in terms of the unbounded ‘limits’ of the desires associated with them. Unless disciplined by determined will these senses would ruin the dignity and life of their ‘master’ — the concerned human being.

How fruitful a controlled sexual life is, can also be learnt from a variety of positive examples available in the Nature.

3.2 Happy Couples: Examples in Nature

A large number of members of the animal kingdom demonstrate such a remarkable degree of discipline and responsibility in matters associated with reproduction and its consequent events that one finds them certainly better than the ‘social animal’ of today.

Noted marine- scientist Dr. Lord had studied the life-cycle of a Stickleback during his long stay in Ireland. According to Dr. Lord, the human society may learn a lot from this sea-fish about — "how and when to prepare for the arrival of an offspring". Only the completely ‘self- dependent’ and healthy males of this subspecies of fish plan for mating. Such a male searches for a female mate only after he prepares a ‘home’ (with the help of sea vegetation and a gel type liquid secreted from his body) at a safe place deep inside the sea for his would-be ‘family’. His patience, hard work and the sense of responsibility is worth noting by those MEN who desire to or expect to get married without even realizing the essential duties (including those with respect to physical financial and social fitness) associated with it. What about those who support/ propagate child- marriages? Shouldn’t they be ashamed to find that even a fish is more sensible and wiser than them?

Mr. Frank Buckland’s work on the Stickleback fish also signifies its talent in house- construction and management. The male fish not only builds an artistically knitted ‘nest’ but also engineers holes in it for proper ventilation; it controls the flow of oxygen by timely fluttering its body according to the flow of water. It takes proper care of the female- mate in her pregnancy; looks after the new born offsprings and even makes swings for them at the ‘roof’ of its small ‘house’.

Similar examples of patience, sincerity, fidelity and industrious sharing of responsibilities are found in the families of Kiwi, Penguins, Emu, Ostrich etc. Even the tiny creatures like the ants are ahead of many higher organisms in this regard. Why can’t all the men as ‘husbands’ also offer harmonious co-operation to their wives especially in the societies where the latter are expected to strictly follow the doctrines of virtuous, dutiful life with due fidelity towards their husbands?

The social system designed by the Rishis (sages of ancient India) was perfect in terms of the virtuous development of the individuals, happy families and society. Here, the Brahmcharya Asrama __ the first phase (until the age of 25 years approximately) of life was set for the acquisition of education (towards the overall development of the personality, gaining knowledge of the Self and of the world around), professional skills for respectable, self- reliant, livelihood, and essential training for becoming a responsible adult member of the society. It was only after a successful completion of this phase that one was allowed to marry an appropriate (with respect to the compatibility of their virtuous background and training during the Brahmcharya Asrama) match of his/her liking. Marriage was a sacred institution for the couple to live together in kind co-operation and with industriousness for mutual upliftment and happiness, along with making due contributions for the peace, progress and happiness of the society.

The sanctity of the marriage institution must be revived in the modern era by generating mutual respect and sacred friendly relationship between the two partners.

CHAPTER 4.

IMPORTANT LINKAGE BETWEEN FEMININE

AND MASCULINE POWERS

The brain and the genitals are two vital sources of energy in the human body. Their respective roles in governing the functions of the body are similar to those of the Geo-north pole and the Geo- south pole in regulating the gravitational motion and the natural structure of the earth. The brain controls the nervous system and is the source of (physical) consciousness in the body and mind. The lower pole, viz. the genital organ is also empowered with biomagnetic and bioelectrical energy; its proper functioning is responsible for the normal maintenance of ligaments and hormones. A healthy state and optimally balanced utilization of both together is essential for auto regulation of the overall functions of the body and mind ranging from metabolism to various psychological states.

The importance of brain and its proper control is well known and the latter is commonly attempted by everybody by means of ‘cool-headedness’, ‘sound- sleep’, recreational activities etc. However, little or almost no attention is paid for protecting the genitals from over- excitation, frictions, unusual and wasteful secretions.

The brain is naturally protected by the hard and strong covering of the skull because the physical and mental consciousness resides in this upper pole and therefore makes it the most ‘valuable’ part of the body. The subtle energy center Sahastrar is likened in the Puranas to Lord Visnu in the Ksir Sagar. This center is the source of all natural and supernatural powers attainable in a human life. As this center subtly exists in the innermost part of the upper pole (brain), the latter indeed controls the direction of one’s life in a given body.

The counterpart of the upper pole is no less important. This center (the lower pole) at the genital organ is not created for dirty, lustful indulgence. This part of the body has been provided with the soft and protective surroundings of the thighs and the belly to suit its delicacy. This pole serves the multiple purposes of absorbing and balancing the (bio)electrical impulses of the brain and creating appropriate biomagnetic currents along with filtering out the harmful waste from the body. The subtle energy center (Muladhar) of this pole is the source of youthfulness, charm, humour, enthusiasm, activity and longevity. Physical friction or stimulation of the sex organs should be avoided maximally in order to maintain the natural powers of this pole. This pole (and hence the genital organ) should also be given due care and respect vis- a- vis the brain.

The Pran of the masculine sex and the Rayi of the feminine sex are respectively like the potential and kinetic forms of the vital energy; their latent powers are described in the spiritual literature as Agni and Soma.

The physical manifestation of these opposite powers generates the positive and negative (bio)electrical currents. The mutual complementarity of their psychological manifestations is remarkable in human life. The ‘somewhat abnormal’ development of the personality of a man (or a woman) who has never had any familial or social contact/ encounter with any woman (or man) easily demonstrates this effect. This mutual psychological dependence is indeed the key to a successful married life; the married couples should realize its importance and avoid misusing its ‘power’ in unrestrained sexual indulgence.

The description about several wives of Lord Krisna or the five husbands of Draupadi and similar other stories cited in the ancient scriptures are often subjected to derogatory criticism by the sociologists and other intellectuals of our times. It should be noted here that the above characters are allegorical; they depict different spiritual powers and not the mortal human beings... Even if one tries to see these characters as historical figures then he/she should note that they belonged to the society of yore where everybody was spiritually awakened and hence the material or bodily pleasures or physical relations or desires naturally had . no place in their lives.

In medieval and modern history one finds existence of some social customs allowing a man to have several wives (e.g. in some parts of Germany after the world wars) and/or several men having a common wife (e.g.. in some villages near the Himalayan valley a few decades ago). Such systems are local and are the results of peculiar socio-political circumstances (e.g. drastic reduction in the male population during the wars or high mortality of women and children during an epidemic etc.). Such arrangements/ customs are viable and acceptable to the human society only till the causes of their origin remain alive, or till the sacred relation of husband and wife is kept away from lust, The erotic attitude would any way be dangerous (from medical point of view) even for the pairs of One Man - One Woman as husband and wife. The customs of polygamy and polyandry are therefore bound to fade away in such societies in due course of time.

4.1 Disciplined Married Life

Biological contact between the two sexes involves the flow of their mutual vital energies from higher levels to the lower ones. Thus, apart from the obvious danger of the contagious effects, the sexual intercourse also amounts to the lowering of the mental and spiritual abilities of the better partner in the pair. It is therefore advisable that the criteria for matching between a pair of ‘would-be’ husband and wife be mainly based on the mutual compatibility of their cultural, psychological and spiritual levels and vital energies instead of a mere comparison between the physical looks and/or social status.

People with strong will-power and extraordinary mental faculties should be more careful about preserving their vital energies because they are more likely to lose them by ‘naturally’ transmitting them to their counterparts during a sexual intercourse. Even for a perfect (with respect to the mutual compatibilities of the vital energies) pair, as mentioned earlier, a sexual contact would always account for a loss in the physical as well as the subtle form of the vital energies (Pran) of both the individuals. Obvious consequences of this loss include reduction in brilliance, memory, intelligence, liveliness, stability, decision making and firmness of mind, immunity, other physical abilities and health in general, Sexual indulgence should therefore be kept to a minimum.

Sexual excitation or erotic feelings are likely to attack every one in today’s undisciplined and morally polluted atmosphere. However, those with good self-control and sincere faith in the moral values would not find it difficult to get rid of these by instantaneous diversion of mind and determined efforts to prevent the recurrence of such situations.

Under no circumstances should a sexual intercourse occur without the willingness and healthy status (of mind and body) of both the partners. Any kind of imbalance or abnormality in this activity affects the nervous system negatively. The common psychosomatic diseases like insomnia, migraine, epilepsy, forgetfulness, hysteria, whimsical, or short-tempered mind etc., as well as some diseases pertaining to various kinds of cardiac malfunctioning are only minor manifestations of such imbalances.

It should always be emphasized that the spiritual part, the latent energy of sex, is more important than the contact of the genital organs in making the married life contented and happy. Practicing purity of thoughts and feelings, dedicating efforts towards the improvement of each other’s overall personality, mutual trust and friendly co-operation, with healthy humour and entertainment are necessary for the nurturing of love and affection between the life partners.

The physical, mental and spiritual health of a child depends largely on the healthy and harmonious coupling of the vital energies of his/ her parents. A mismatch in this regard may at times result in contagious diseases or abnormalities in the offspring. Birth of a child is a very important event in the lives of the parents and preparation for its occurrence should begin only after a conscious decision by both the parents at an appropriate time during their disciplined married life. Along with the consideration of all the worldly consequences and duties, a thorough self-analysis by the parents is a must whenever they ‘plan’ to have an offspring. Sexual intercourse should preferably be performed as a scientific experiment towards reproduction after such preparations. A determined and faithful effort in this regard would definitely bless the parents with a virtuous baby as per their plans.

4.2 Bioelectrical Effects

Scientifically speaking, sexual intercourse is a process of reversion of the bioelectrical energies of the interacting bodies. The genital is the source of this electricity which is generated as soon as this organ is stimulated by the contact of the ‘oppositely charged’ counterpart. The attraction between the two opposite charges is responsible for the feeling of physical satisfaction during sexual activity; this enjoyment is more in the young bodies because of the excess of vital energy (Pran) at that age.

Research in the above aspect of sex would help in the analysis of the creative as well as harmful effects of the reversion of the bio- electric currents of Pran and Rayi or Agni and Soma. This process involves the mutual transfer of the more powerful virtues as well as the evils of the involved individuals. It is therefore necessary to perform such interactions scientifically with due care. Needless to say that the subtle effects of such contacts with characterless, lustful person(s) are far more disastrous than the obvious physical (e.g. infection) and social harms (e.g. defamation).

The bioelectrical energy currents in the body are controlled by those generated in the brain; the intensity and effectiveness of the latter actually depends on the psychological and spiritual levels of the consciousness. By practicing a disciplined moral life and making dedicated efforts towards the upliftment of the ‘conscious-level’ of the self and of the companion, one can make the reversion bioelectrical energy (during copulation) as sacred and purposeful a process as that of Saktipat.

Saktipat is a spiritual transmission of energy in which a spiritual master blesses the deserving disciples by transmitting appropriate portions of his/her own vital energy — examples include Swami Ramakrishna’s saktipat on Narendra to convert him into a true Vivekananda; Saktipat of Chankya on Chandragupta to enable the latter to become a mighty and strong emperor of united India.

The uplifted conscious levels of the parents and their determination to consider the bioelectrical interactions during copulation as a controlled scientific experiment on the reversion of their Pran would lead to a kind of a Saktipat on the resulting embryo. Preparations for such an experiment would obviously be like a spiritual practice (Sadhana) and would necessarily demand a natural control over unrestrained sexual excitation and intercourse.

The coupling of the feminine and masculine vital energies is a great phenomenon and it is entirely in the hands of the two sexes whether to benefit from the controlled and well thought of scientific utilization of this process or to bear the burden of its poisonous effects (in terms of the loss of vitality) by senseless sexual excitation triggered by lust or uncontrolled mind.

CHAPTER 5

SUBLIMATION OF SEX - ENERGY

AND SELF-AWAKENING

The writings of the Indian sages of yore have named the sex- deity as Manoj or Manasij – which literally means ‘born from and within the mind’. It is therefore the disciplining of the mind which has been emphasized there. Various Yoga practices of controlling the sense organs begin with an appropriate training of the mind.

The findings of the modern medical and psychological sciences have also shown that it is the mental impulse and not the body- physique, appearance or physiology which mainly governs the sexual stimulation and indulgence. Several hormones secreted by the pituitary gland regulate the physiological and biochemical processes associated with sexual stimulation and corresponding response of the genital organs. According to specialists like Dr. Hermenchen and Dr. Kruschens, the psychological conditioning and internal mental state is responsible for initiating (or stopping) the secretion and growth of these hormones.

The results of the psychological research of Dr. Theracy Wandev of the Chicago institute and the biochemical research of Dr. Ruen Steen have shown strong correlation between a woman’s psychology and the secretion of the hormones regulating the menstrual cycle. Unusual changes (e.g. irritation, aggressiveness, or, depression, etc.) of varied degrees are often seen in the psychological behaviour of the women during and around the time of their menses.

After the early research on the effects of climatic and physico- chemical (including thermodynamic and optical) conditions on the level of growth hormone, age of puberty etc., the advanced research on the biochemistry of sexual behaviour has focused its attention on its neuro- physiological and neuro-bioelectrical effects. Significant observations have been made (via EEG, EMG and related signal analysis) on the changes in the neuro-bioelectricity with respect to different conditions (e.g. during aggression, erotic thinking, romantic moods, depression, humorous moods, normal moods, deep meditation etc...) of the mind. It has been found that the neuro-bioelectrical impulses stimulate secretion of different hormones; amorous and erotic moods are found to increase such bioelectrical effects on sexual hormonal activation; the normal moods or engagement in creative activity have shown bioelectrical currents of different types, during deep meditation, the excitation of these electrical activities is reduced to the minimum and entirely new kinds of neurotransmitters and hormones are recorded. Thorough practices of Yoga and meditation (for self- realization) allow one to increase or reduce the amount of hormones like Dopamine, Epinephrine and other secretions from the adrenal and endocrine glands.

The electrostatic changes on the particles of ovum and the sperm determine the sex of the offspring. Negative charge is dominant in the particles of a female embryo and positive in the male .It is well known that the male gamete’s (i.e., father’s) sex chromosomes are indeed responsible for determining the sex of the offspring. Similar results are obtained from the experiments on the electrostatic charges. Only the sperm is found to contain particles that are positively as well as negatively charged. Whether the particles in the embryo’s germ- cell would be only negatively charged (implying the offspring’s sex to be female) or would contain both positively charged as well as negatively charged particles (implying the offspring to be male) thus depends on which particles of the sperm were activated during the sexual reproduction. Experiments on chemically activating only one type of charged particles in the sperm were largely unsuccessful; however the electrophotasis experiments (on Rabbits) carried out by the two Russian scientists – Dr.(Mrs) V. N. Schroder and Dr. N. K. Kolstov have shown positive results in this regard.

The in-vitro experimental research on the electrophoresis of human germ - cells conducted by Dr. Manueal Gedin and Dr, Levin of the UK had shown encouraging results which raised hopes for the treatment of impotent men and precontrolling of the sex of the offspring by appropriate electrical stimulation. Dr. L. Chatulus of the Columbia University had experimented (in-vitro) on about 1000 samples of sperms and he had found that only one type of particles can be activated in the sperm under appropriate electrical fields.

In the m-vivo processing, the generation and maintenance of such electrical fields and hence the extent and type of the activation of the germ cells are controlled by different kinds of hormones whose secretion ultimately depends of the conscious state of the mind. Thus, not only the sexual desire and stimulation but also the ‘completeness’ of the involved process (at the psychological as well as physical and biological levels), the possibility of embryogenesis (and hence the possibility of a child’s birth) and the electrostatic charges on the particles of the embryo’s sex- chromosomes (and hence the sex of the child) all are basically controlled by the internal (spiritual) status of the mind(s) of the persons indulged in copulation.

The subtle role of the consciousness existing in the living body is much more significant than its above mentioned manifestations in the form of bioelectrical and hormonal reactions. Maximum utilization of this power is aimed at in the Yoga practices of Brahmacharya and Kundalini Sadhana.

5.1 Sublimation of Sex Energy

The physical energy of sex is generally seen in the natural occurrence of puberty and related psychological developments in all men and women. The research work of Dr. Freud – one of the most popular psychologists of modern times – was focused a great deal on the mental aspects of this power. Lust, violence during sexual excitation and the hideous crimes like rape illustrate the destructive effects of sex which arise due to the unethical, indisciplined, immoral and erotic thinking and uncontrolled, perverted life-style of vast majority of present day humans.

The constructive power of sex is most commonly manifested in the reproduction of an offspring. The actual potential of sex is much more creative and important though latent in nature, The subtle form of this power is described as Kama in the Indian spiritual literature. Kama is considered to be the root cause of any kind of desire associated with the Jivatma (– the soul embodied as a humanbeing, for example).

The Karma Yoga philosophy of the Gita focuses on Niskama (meaning without any attachment to the results of the action). All the practices of spiritual upliftment also emphasize the controlling of the Kama by ‘self -realization’. Liberation from Kama (desire and attachment) is considered to open up the path for the Jivatma to attain the state of ultimate bliss. The story of Kamadeva’s defeat and transformation by the power of Lord Siva as mentioned earlier, is indeed an illustration of disciplining of the element of Kama by the discerning intelligence.

The observance of Brahmcharya (i.e. a disciplined life, free from lust, carnal pleasure and related thoughts and desires) is described as the most important and effective method for the awakening and proper orientation of the subtle part (Ojas) of one’s own vital energy. In view of the limitless subtle power of sex, Brahmcharya is considered essential for the spiritual upliftment of a humanbeing.

It should be noted that Brahmcharya can not be observed by mere escapism from married life or forced physical separation from the opposite sex. On the contrary, such imposed disciplines may sometimes be extremely dangerous as they might lead to eroticism and sexual crimes and/or psychosomatic diseases. The natural liberation of mind from lust and associated thoughts is the basic requirement in any spiritual discipline. As mentioned earlier, with the observance of a chaste, dutiful, cheerful, mutually faithful and refined (towards human dignity and welfare) lifestyle, even normal married couples can practice Brahmcharya in the truest sense.

In the ancient times, many Risis (sages) and their wives/ husbands used to obey Brahmcharya in their married life. Even amongst the common people those days sexual interaction was an act of determined social responsibility towards giving birth to a virtuous child after necessary preparation of their own minds, bodies and characters at suitable times. Many seers of that era used to remain unmarried and thereby maintain their personal requirements and familial responsibilities at the minimum. These Brahmcharis used to dedicate their lives for the all round development of the society and used to tour round-the -year in different parts of the globe for this noble cause of realization of the self in every form of life on the earth.

In higher levels of spiritual Yoga practices, the transmutation of Kama used to be carried out by the Kundalini Sadhana, to awaken the divine elements in the Jivatma.

5.2 The Serpentine Energy (Kundalini)

One of the most talked about, mysterious and hard disciplines of Yoga is the Kundalini Sadhana. The philosophy of this Sadhana (dedicated practice) deals with the awakening, transformation and refinement of Kama (the subtle element of sex).

The awakened power of Kundalini transforms or reorients the psychological components of sexual desire into pure affection, reverence, faith, artistic talents, courage, optimism, valour, tolerance, sense of responsibility, altruism and (hence) asceticism. In simple illustrative terms, the control and optimal utilization of the vital power of sex under the disciplines of Kundalini Sadhana can be compared to the setting up of reservoirs for rain waters and networking of canals through them which not only prevent the calamities of floods but also offer useful irrigation facilities. The power of Kundalini is described in the spiritual literature as the source of Kama residing in the Muladhar – the subtle energy center existing in the innermost center of the genital organ. It is said to be the generator of ambitions, enthusiasm and cheerfulness. Its potential is symbolized as a kindling ocean, ‘repository of vital energy’ etc. Kundalini is depicted in the Yoga scripts as a female serpent lying asleep in the Muladhar. The downward secretions through the genital organ are described as the poisonous discharges of this serpent. If awakened (by thorough Yoga practices of Kundalini Jagaran under the adept guidance of a noble spiritual master), the upward flow of this latent power stimulates subtle energy centers of Kama and inspires creativity, youthfulness, optimism and joy and paves the way for spiritual upliftment and hence for the attainment of supernatural capabilities.

As stated earlier, Kundalini Jagaran is a difficult task and its simile with the ‘churning of an ocean’ appears to be quite appropriate. The latent part of the vital energy is gradually activated in this process. This awakened power rises up from the Muladhar and reaches the Brahmrandhra ( – the ‘inlets’ of the Sahastrar) as a quavering wave through the Susumna (viz the innermost part of the spinal cord). The Sahastrar then absorbs this subtle energy current.

The Sahastrar is compared to a lotus in the literature on Yoga and Meditation. Lotus is considered to be a symbol of divine austerity and celestial beauty and art in the Indian culture. The ancient scripts depict the Goddess Laksmi as siting on a lotus; in the four-armed pictures, Lord Visnu is shown to hold Lotus (Padma) in one hand with Sankh, Chakra and Gada in the others.

The Sahastrar in the subtle body – like the brain in the physical body – is indeed the most revered and important center for the existence of the Jivatma. During meditation, this center of spiritual energy is concentrated upon as the reservoir of the Supreme Powers of Lords Brahma, Visnu and Siva subtly showered upon the Jivatma. The Sahastrar is also considered to be the source of celestial guidance (Sat-Guru).

The knowledge about the Yoga practice (Sadhana) of awakening the Kundalini is regarded as Brahm-Vidya ( the Supreme Knowledge of the cosmic Divine Power). It is not available in a detailed/ complete form in the present era except in the memories of the rare truly experienced spiritual masters who have attained highest levels of self realisation.

The ‘rise’ in the level of the latent vital energy residing in the Muladhar and its union with that in the Sahastrar during the awakening of the Kundalini results in the upliftment and transformation of Kama into its original divine form. It is indeed the highest state of the success of Brahmcharya, in which the power of Kama is not only completely protected from being debased in the disgusting act of carnal sex but is also transmuted into its pure, eternal form. The sacred power of transformed Kama awakens the divinity existing in a human being; the attainment of supernatural talents and purity of sentiments is a mere physical manifestation of this grand transformation.

CHAPTER 6.

THE GENESIS OF LOVE AND DESIRE

The eternal power of Kundalini is considered to be the source of Kama Kala – - the spiritual element of love and desire. The awakening of Kundalini and its subtle conjunction with the Brahmrandhra (lying deep inside the Sahastrar in the innermost subtle center of the brain) is described as the state of fulfillment of Kama and hence of the ultimate fulfillment of all the desires. The transliteration of some excerpts from the available ancient Sanskrit literature on Kama Kala and Kundalini are presented (along with literal word- translation) in the Appendices- I & II of this book as references to highlight the spiritual and cosmic domains of influence of Kama.

As mentioned earlier, Kundalini, in all normal human beings lies dormant in the Muladhar in an unconscious state. Owing to the fact that the Muladhar subtly resides in the innermost center of the genital organ and that the word Kama Krida in Sanskrit language also refers to sexual intercourse, the terminology associated- with Kundalini and Kama Kala is often misinterpreted as that pertaining to physical art of sex.

The use of terms like ‘combination (Maithun) of Yoni and Linga, Raj and Virya to indicate the conjunction of the conscious energies of the Kundalini and Brahmrandhra adds to the above confusion because the words Yoni and Linga or Raj and Virya are also used in Sanskrit to describe respectively the feminine and masculine genders or genital organs and the word Maithun also means copulation. Such misinterpretations should be avoided as they do not deal with the actual multifaceted scientific meanings of Kama and would not at all represent the psychological and spiritual aspects of sex for that matter.

It should be noted that even psychologically, both the feminine as well as the masculine characteristics exist in every humanbeing. The behavioural nature of a person (be that a man or a woman physically) would be manly if the masculine characteristics are dominant in his/her psychology. Similarly, many men may be found to have a woman like psychology just because the corresponding psychological features are dominant in them. In spiritual terms, all the humanbeings are a perfect combination of the feminine and the masculine powers (viz. Prakrti and Purus) of Nature. This fact is indeed symbolized in the joint reference to the divine powers by the names: Radha-Krishna, Siva-Parvati or Ardha-Narisvar etc. in the ancient scriptures. A Jivatma is defined to be an absolute unit of consciousness and it does not have any gender.

6.1 Kundalini and The Science of Sex

At a superficial level, the genital organs are regarded responsible for the sexual desire and pleasure associated with sex. It is well known from physiological studies that the compression and stimulation of the genitals is regulated by the central part of the lumber region of the spinal cord. Deeper scientific investigations on the neurological and psychological aspects have shown (vis-a-vis the interpretations from spiritual literature) that all the physiological activities (including the excitation of the genital organs) and bio- chemical functions involved in the physical act of sex are actually governed by the nervous system’s signals processed through the Susumna Nadi (— a subtle tubular duct in the deep central part of the spinal cord). The exact point of this regulatory activity is considered to reside (on the Susumna Nadi) right above the Swadhisthan Chakra ( – a subtle energy center behind the navel). Prof. Henry Osley’s book entitled ‘Notes on Physiology’ presents the scientific education of these points in detail.

The impulses from the above mentioned activation centers (and hence the secretions from associated glands) passing through the Susumna fall in the region of physical manifestation of the energy current of Kundalini. The physical effects of awakening of the Kundalini include the giving of an upwards thrust to these impulses whereby the energy associated with them could be utilized to stimulate other activity centers (other than the genital organs) of physiological and neurological importance.

In his book entitled ‘Think and Grow Rich’ Prof. Napoleon Hill throws light on some important aspects of the power of sex. He considers that the energy involved in sexual processing is powerful enough to affect the mind and body. He therefore emphasizes the proper use of this energy as a ‘driving force’ for uplifting inspirations in one’s life.

We all know that water, if spread over the floor, would go waste in normal course; however, the steam generated under proper control from the same amount of water would become a potential source of energy. Similarly, the latent power of Kama is usually wasted in a mere sensual pleasure during sexual intercourse. This power, if channelised with proper awareness, may be utilized in the subtle areas of creative talents such as art and poetry and in awakening of the feelings of deep love and compassion. This latent power may also be utilised in augmenting mental concentration which is necessary for the development of one’s intellectual faculties.

Sexual desire is a natural function of the living system of a normal humanbeing. If suppressed, it would., as per the universal law of action and reaction, result in harmful negative effects or become more aggressive....; Dr. Freud and many other expert psychologists have therefore warned against such unnatural controls. An easy, natural and scientifically justified way out is that of avoiding the occasions (esp. those leading to erotic thinking) of sensual and mental excitations and diverting the mind towards creative entertainment and compassionate activities. Sincere efforts in this regard along with faith (strengthened by the support of religious practices like prayers and Upasana) in the divine qualities of human — consciousness are essential towards initiating a spiritual experiment for the control and sublime transformation of Kama.

Above experiments, if consistently performed gradually result in preserving the reservoir of the Prana (vital energy) in the Muladhar and help in the awakening of some of the divine virtues existing in inner layers of unconscious mind. An over all energetic and healthy body, enthusiastic mind and manifestation of the divine virtues (particularly, the virtues like compassion, austerity, peace, courage and creativity and altruism) in one’s character are indicators of the success of these experiments. It is only after achieving this success that one could begin experimenting (under proper guidance) with Kundalini Jagaran – the Sadhana process which ultimately results in the subtle linkage of the Prana in Muladhar with the spiritual faculties of sahastrar.

Dharma (righteous conduct), Artha (honestly earned material success), Kama (fulfillment of righteous desires) and Moksa (liberation from ego and worldly attachments) are regarded in the Indian philosophy as the main objectives of human life. In common language, the word Kama is often interpreted as the desire for sex. The actual implication of this term however is much deeper and wider; all forms of creation and appreciation of art are included in the meaning of Kama; refined entertainment, delightful happiness and enjoyment are the sentimental manifestations of kama.

The activity and manifestation of Kama originates from the combination of the spiritual elements of Rayi and Pran (or Prakrati and Purus); the generation of ‘vital power’ here can be compared to the production of electric current by a connection between opposite charges. Man and woman are regarded as complementary as well as supplementary to each other like the powers of Purus and Prakrati. The vital energy in a human body is basically generated from the combination of these two aspects of the universal vital power. The original Prakrati (‘feminine’) aspect of the universal vital power is said to exist in the Muladhar and its complementary – viz. the Purus (‘masculine’) – aspect in the Sahastrar; the spiritual elements of these complementary powers are defined respectively as Sakti and Siva.

The process of Kundalini Jagaran aims at binding and unifying the subtle elements of Sakti and Siva. This union, upon attainment of Kundalini Jagaran, is manifested as Siddhi and Riddhi (implying supernatural talents at physical and spiritual levels). In its entire spectrum, this state of the human psyche, is realized as that of Swarga or Mukti – - the ultimate state of material and spiritual satisfaction.

In the following Sloka of the holy Atharva Veda it is prayed that the divine power of Kama be blessed upon the human- life:

Yaste Sivastanvah Kama, Bhadrayabhih Satyam Bhavati Yadvranipetabhistvamasmam Abhi Sanvisasvanyatrapapi Rasvesaya Dhiyah –

(Meaning: O’ Lord ! Your manifestation in Kama also is eminent, splendid and auspicious. May it be inspired in us to liberate our minds from sinful thoughts and to cultivate delight of sacred enjoyment.)

The magnificent power of Kundalini is described by the sages of yore as Kama Bij and Kama Kala (meaning – the source of Kama). It is to be recalled that these words should not be confused with the sexual interactions or carnal pleasure. The power of Kama in its truest sense is the creator of enjoyment and enthusiasm. Muladhar is also referred in the ancient literature as the container of the Kama Bij and Sahastrar as that of the Source of Knowledge ( Jnan Bija). A perfect combination of Kama and Jnan leads to an overall upliftment and progress of life. The process of Kundalini Jagaran aims at this noble culmination.

Every human body possesses the latent elements of male as well as female sex. Physical transformation of a male into a female sex or vice- versa is not very difficult by surgical operations today. Such phenomena are rare but the observation of a feminine nature in a man (or, a masculine nature in a woman) is quite common. A balanced combination of Rayi (–the subtle source of feminine qualities like tolerance, affection, compassion and artistic creativity etc.) and Pran (– the subtle source of the masculine characteristics like valour, stability, wisdom, strength etc.) in one’s nature is essential for the perfection of his/her personality.

Mutual respect and co-operation between men and women is of utmost importance in the external spheres of human- life. Similarly, at the internal level, every individual can attain an ideal human nature only by awakening the virtues of the feminine as well as the masculine natures. Kundalini Jagaran accomplishes such a harmonious perfection in one’s overall personality, character and deeds.

CHAPTER 7.

ATTAINMENT OF ETERNAL BLISS

Passion for worldly pleasures is a natural impulse of the unrefined humanbeing. However, few people realize that hankering after fulfillment of ever increasing unsatiable desires, not only makes one dissatisfied for ever but also diverts one’s life into a dark path of total dissolution.

It needs to be stressed over and again that the human- conscience is complete in itself as a controller of its own body and mind. Every person is the master of his/her own destiny if he/she maintains his physical, mental and sentimental activities under proper control and lets his/her conscience guide him/her to lead a purposeful life befitting human dignity.

Modern era has witnessed the worst possible effects of the materialistic life. An unsatiable urge for bodily and materialistic pleasures often possesses one’s psyche in the latter years of teenage. The visible ill-effects of licentious living begin to show-up their presence only towards the middle age, because by this time the natural immunity and liveliness of youth start waning. Increasing incidence of physical and mental disorders is therefore a common occurrence these days amongst middle-aged persons. The wastage and loss of vital energy in worldly pleasures also results in untimely deaths in many cases.

As stated earlier, maximum loss of vital energy and mental energy occurs in sexual indulgence and eroticism. A controlled and austere life-style, on the other hand, leads to a healthy, happy and long life. A thorough and sincere practice of Brahmcharya is therefore considered a very important part of self- control (Sainyam). Jesus Christ remained a Brahmchari throughout his life. Many great saints, philosophers, scientists and other talented personalities in India and abroad have set shining examples of ‘glorious lives’ by practicing Brahmcharya.

Indian philosophy has characterized Brahmcharya as the greatest Tapa; The holy Vedas state –

‘Brahmcaryain Tapasa Deva Ma Mumupadhrat’

(Meaning: The effects of Brahmcharya not only provide mental and physical strength but also open up the path for longevity and victory over death).

A Sloka in the Chandogya Upnishad even equates the value of Brahmcharya with that of the entire knowledge of the four Vedas.

There is a short story in the Puranas : Once upon a time Kumara, a son of Lord Siva asked him about "how to attain extraordinary talents and spiritual goals without undergoing the hard and dedicated training of the Gudh Yoga as practiced by you...?" The Omniscient Lord Siva replied –

''Siddhe Bindu Mahayatne, Kim Na Siddhayati Bhutate |

Yasya Prasadanmahima, Mamapyetadraso Bhavet | "

(Meaning: One who has practiced complete Brahmcharya with devotion, purity of body, mind and character throughout his/her life – that individual can become omnipotent on this earth.)

Lord Krisna’s preaching in the Bhagvad Gita states –

Ye Hi SamSparsja Bhoga ukhyojanah Aiv Te |

(Meaning: Sensual pleasures are unstable and desire for practice of these certainly results in the creation of troubles and worries. Therefore you (Arjuna) should have a clear and controlled mind and should keep yourself off from such shallow pleasures and attachments.)

Some of the ancient scriptures of knowledge on the worldly (materialistic) subjects and the philosophical and sociological theories of the present century also emphasize the importance of Brahmcharya. For instance, Charak Sanhita – a treatise on Ayurveda ( – the Indian Science of Medicine) – mentions:

Satamupasari Samyagastam Parivarjanam |

Brahmcharyopavasascha Niyamasch prathagvidhah |

(Meaning: Service of the compassionate people, abandonment of the tyrants and the practice of Brahmcharya along with fasting, righteous thinking and action – these are the key elements of self development and overall progress.)

Noted biologist Dr. M.D. Crown has observed – One who is devoted to the practice of Brahmcharya would not fall sick; the functioning of his/her digestive system and metabolism remains perfect even in old age and he/she enjoys a long, healthy and youthful life.

A distinguished American naturopath, Dr. B. Lusta, states that – the extent and regularity of Brahmcharya indeed gives the potential for significantly important activities in life.

Great saints and social reformers like Swami Ramteerth and Yogi Aurobindo have analysed the spiritual and scientific effects of Brahmcharya. Their findings are summarized as below:

The upward movement of oil in a lamp helps the conversion of oil into light upon ignition. Similarly, the upward movement (through the Susumna Nadi in the spinal cord) of the vital energy of Virya ( – the source and medium for the existence of Sperm/ Ovum) in a Brahmchari leads to the conversion of this energy into Ojas (overall brilliance). Thus the omnipotent (though latent) energy of Virya – - which otherwise goes waste through stimulation and discharge during sexual intercourse (or equivalent excitation of the genital organs due to erotic thinking) – not only remains preserved by a sincere and successful practice of Brahmcharya but also enriches the body, mind and Pran (life) of the Brahmchari by tremendous potential and supernatural abilities.

The supernatural effects of the latent power of Virya could be realized by an individual only by performing the spiritual (as well as scientific) experiment of Brahmcharya with due dedication. The ‘visible’ (i.e.

observable by modern scientific experiments) powers of Virya are also worth mentioning here – the physical state of Virya is a kind of chemical which contains the germ cells; its constituents are water (75%), Phosphate of lime (5%), Fats (4%), Protein oxides (3%) and Phosphorous, some Phosphates and Sodium Chloride etc. (13%). The Sperm of a man is produced in his spermary and the Ovum of a woman is produced in her ovary; a plasma type essence of Virya chemically generated at these points induces its ‘influence’ in the form of a magnetic charm throughout the body. The brightness or charm at one’s face (or in one’s overall appearance) largely depends on this influence rather that the physique of his/her body. The effect (called Antavirya in Ayurvedic terminology) of Virya is indeed responsible for the ‘manhood’ in a young man (or equivalently, the ‘womanhood’ in a young lady).

Despite advanced research, the biological and medical sciences of today have not been able to discover the fundamental principles behind the origin of Virya; although the chemical composition of its physical medium is well known and so is the fact that a meiotic combination of matured sperm and ovum results in the reproduction of a germ cell which carries the Virya in the zygote...

The zygote, with the help of the necessary energy provided in the mother’s womb, multiplies through mitotic divisions (of one into two, two into four and so on...) and gives rise to another living body. Thus, the small molecule (length (1/1600)-th to (1/170)-th of an inch) can be regarded as the basic unit of the physical manifestation of consciousness and the carrier or seed of life in this three-dimensional world. The biological (including physiological and genetical) potential of Virya is indeed tremendous and complete unravelling of its mystery is beyond the reach of our current knowledge of modern sciences.

The ancient Yogis – Indian sages of yore – had, through their deep insight, unravelled the subtle as well as the physical/ biological properties of virya without the help of any external instruments. Some of their findings (quoted in the form of Slokas in the ancient literature) can by now be interpreted scientifically and even be observed in the laboratories. For example, experiments in em- embryology and developmental biology have shown that the virya – carried over through the zygote – initially resides in the developing brain of the foetus; whence the development of the offspring’s body begins through his/her brain. Ancient Indian experts (Yogis and philosophers) state that at the time of birth, major amount ( weight of 80 grains of rice) of virya is present in the upper central part inside the brain of the child. This is the reason why a child’s nature is pure like that of a mystic of the highest order and the period of childhood resembles a blissful state of a truly spiritual life.

The power of virya in an infant grows rapidly if he/she is tenderly fed upon the natural foods like the mother’s milk (supplemented by the milk of cow or goat in case the mother’s milk is not available in sufficient quantity). As the child grows, the quantity and the type of food would change; extra precaution is needed in maintaining the purity in his/her food and the surrounding atmosphere. Balanced quantities, in natural forms, of various vegetables, sprouted cereals, fruits and milk provide a nourishing food to the body of a child. However, of far more importance is, the development of a child in an appropriately sacred environment and the inculcation of refined Sanskaras ( – the basic elements of one’s inner personality) during the formative period of childhood.

The Gurukul tradition of the ancient Indian social system was ideal in the above regard; where a child at the age of 5 years used to be sent to the Ashram ( – school of human development) of a Guru ( – an spiritually eminent and scholarly talented master) for righteous training and education for the next 20 years. The child’s natural tendencies of adaptation and learning by imitation could assimilate the immense austerity and purity of the Gurukul’s atmosphere into his/her own Sanskaras and thus lead to an ideal development of his/her personality under the noble guidance of the Guru.

(Is it not important for the members of the civilized society today – to think for a moment and compare our present system of child -development/ education with that of the above mentioned Gurukul system – ? What are our children learning at home and in the school these days?)

The span of time (from the age of 5 to 25 years) spent in the Gurukul used to be most important from the point of production and upward movement of the energy of Virya because Brahmcharya was practiced by every disciple in a natural and ideal way during this period in the Gurukul. This initial phase of human- life was therefore termed as the Brahmcharyashram in the ancient scriptures on Indian social system. The age group specified by the great Rishis ( – Indian sages of yore) for this phase of life is also remarkable in view of the following scientific facts:

During the age-group of about 9 to 12 years the power of virya comes down (from the brain) and spreads upto the inner center behind the throat and gives rise to puberty. It is at this age that the curiosity and/or attraction for the opposite sex would begin to occur in the child’s mind. Unless supported by appropriate training or psychological background, even co-education might cause negative effects in the immature minds in some cases, It is at this juncture that extra care becomes crucial to prevent an untimely downward flow of the virya which is likely to happen due to the psychological excitation created by extra interest in the opposite sex and/or curiosity about sexual interactions in general. If left uncontrolled, this (although subtle) loss of virya would severely retard the child’s intellectual development and lay the foundations for sexual and psychological weaknesses and diseases.

It may be noted again that under the Gurukul system of education, a child, having spent 4 to 6 years in a holy environment, till the age of puberty, used to be so ‘finely’ trained, that the chances of unnatural downfall of his/her virya was totally annulled.

As per the process of natural biological development, the virya in the teenagers flows down through the spinal cord and finally reaches the Muladhar. The presence of virya in the Muladhar begins to awaken the sexual desire. This leads to the first testing phase in the practice of Brahmacharya; because, a balanced control of the body as well as the mind becomes necessary but also harder (unless protected by the strength of character ‘gifted’ in a Gurukul kind of system) at this stage. By the age of 24 to 25 years the biologically functional energy of virya spreads from the Muladhar to all parts of the body. This ‘diffusion’ (and corresponding inductive influence) of virya is illustrated in the following Sloka:

Yatha Payasi Sarpistu, Gudsceksau Raso Yatha |

Evam Hi Sakale Eale Sukra Tisthati Dehinama ||

(Meaning: The existence of virya in a matured body is similar to that of the ghee (clarified butter) in the milk; oil in the sesamum seeds; sweetness in the sugarcane; or inflammableness in the wood.)

As mentioned earlier, a thorough observance of Brahmacharya till the age of 25 years or above ensures good health and energetic life. A scientifically austere development of the mind in such people also endows them with clarity of thoughts, righteousness of character, enthusiastic endeavour and zeal for blissful and progressive life of a responsible citizen and a dignified humanbeing.

The pleasure of physical sex indulgence is momentary and amounts to colossal loss of vital energy. Long- lasting joy can be enjoyed in every action of life if the virya is cautiously preserved and protected by Brahmcharya and is allowed to spread its energy in the entire body through the natural biological process.

The normal flow and expansion of virya from Sahastrar to Muladhar and to other parts of the body upto the age of 25 years is a natural biological phenomenon. However, once it reaches the Muladhar, the reversal of the movement of virya cannot be achieved without dedicated and specific Sadhana practices of Yoga. Many specialized Pranayam Sadhanas are performed during the practice of Kundalini Jagaran so as to awaken the Surya Chakra ( – the subtle energy center of the solar plexus) and use its ‘energy’ to activate and subtlize the virya throughout the body. The subtle ‘current’ of this virya is then gradually drawn upwards along the spinal cord by especially prescribed (by a noble spiritual master) practices of higher levels of Yoga and meditation. In this process, if performed methodically and with preservence, the latent power of virya reaches the Sahastrar via the other five chakras (i.e. the subtle energy centers along the inner core of the spinal cord). The ultimate absorption of this power in the Sahastrar and the realization of this power in the form of divine beatitude is described in the ancient literature as the state of Brahm Nirvan. One who attains this state is said to be a perfect Yogi like the omnipotent, omniscient Lord Siva.

It is not advisable for ordinary person to take up the awakening of Kundalini or identical practices of Yogsadhanas. However, realizing the immense potential of virya, each one of us can and must begin to critically review our personal life-style and take immediate steps to minimize the loss of this vital source of universal energy contained in our own body. Modern social and educational systems should also take a serious note of it and help in the creation of an atmosphere where the downward flow and loss of virya is not only protected in every individual but is also given an upwards thrust by the adoption of discipline in day-to-day routine activities and by inculcation of high moral values in every aspect of life from infanthood onwards.

Protection of the reservoir of the universal energy of virya existing in every cell of our body is the source of ultimate bliss and fulfillment. Each one of us can work for its attainment while living a normal life inspired by noble ideal in the discharge of our social responsibilities as the children of the Supreme Universal Power.

(Great Power) Kundalini – you perforate (i.e. overcome) the Earth in the Muladhar Cakra, Fire in the Swadhisthana Cakra, Water in the Manipura Cakra, Air in the Anahat Cakra and Ether in the Visuddha Cakra. You then illuminate the mind in the Ajna Cakra and ultimately enjoy meeting the ParaBraham (the supreme Universal consciousness) in the Sahastrar.

Avapya Swam Bhumi Bhujagcnibhamadhyusta Valaya ||

Swamatmana Kratva, Swapisi Kula Kunde Kuharini ||

(c.f. Saundarya Lahari /10)

Meaning: (Oh! Great Power Kundalini) – You, coiled like a serpent, sleep in the multitudinous reservoir in the Muladhar.

Avidya Namatta, Stimiramihiroddipanakari ||

Jadanam Caitanya, Stavaka Makaranda Strutisira ||

Daridranam Cintamani Gunanika, Janya Jaladhau ||

Nimnagnam Dastra, Murari Puearahasya Bhavati ||

- (c.f, Saundarya Lahari)

Meaning: You (addressing Kundalini) are like the Sun as you eliminate the darkness of ignorance. You are the stream of intellect which awakens the dull and dead (i.e. unwise) minds by pouring the ‘nectar’ of consciousness in them. You are like a necklace of most valuable gems (called Cintamani) for the poor . You are the ‘boat’ of hope and support for those immersed in the Bhavasagar (the ocean of worries, sufferings – of the cycle of birth and death – created by worldly attachments). You are effective like the sharp teeth of Lord Varaha in killing and eliminating the evils.[Shankaracharya has described the Yoga process of awakening of the Sat Cakras (the six subtle energy centers along the inner portion of the spinal cord) and the upliftment of Kundalini in the Slokas numbered 36 to 41 of Saundarya Lahari. How a small and ordinary child like him could become the gifted great person by the ‘blessings’ of the Kundalini – is also narrated by Shri Shankaracharya himself in following Sloka:]

Tavastanya Manye Dharani Dharkanye Hradayatah ||

Pathah Paravarah Parivahatim Sarasvatamiva ||

Dayavatya Datta Dravida Sisurasvadya Tavayat ||

Kavinam Praudhanamajani Kamaniyah Kavayita ||

– (c.f. Saundarya Lahari)

Meaning: (Oh mother Kundalini), by drinking the milk of your breasts in the form of knowledge, this small dravida child became capable of writing this poesy – like a matured scholarly poet.
